Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley

So, I was listening to the radio the other day and as the commentators were discussing Michael Jackson they compared him to Elvis. The comment was made that Michael Jackson was truely the first international pop star and that he reached a level of international acclaim that Elvis never could have. First, do you agree with this? Why or why not? More specifically, however, why do you think that Michael Jackson was able to become as internationally famous as he was?

  1. I agree that Michael Jackson is the first “international” pop star, even over Elvis. Both have contributed greatly to pop culture and music, and both were in great demand and died prematurely. I believe music videos and the magnitude music had grown helped Michael Jackson become such a worldwide icon, where Elvis only had radio and concert hype within the continental US.
Presley mainly traveled the USA and performed a lot in Las Vegas. Michael Jackson made himself accessible all over the world. Michael became famous for his youth hood band, The Jackson 5. Elvis gained national exposure by getting on the television show Stage Show after his release of Heartbreak. Michael was nationally exposed before he was nine years old, and America was able to watch him grow up into a pop icon.
Elvis seems as a more average man than Michael grew up to be. Michael’s screwed childhood, or lack of one, caused him to act in strange ways. This makes Michael more intriguing than Elvis in one aspect. Michael has all the skin bleaching and the tabloid news. Michael made for a more interesting story than Elvis did, since Elvis just made the news for more common purposes.
Elvis’s music videos seemed more traditional, since the art and choreography of a music video had not really materialized by that point. He seemed to just strum his guitar in front of the camera, where Michael danced and created a story into his video. With Thriller and many other top hits, he became a sensation in America.
With all those points, that is how I feel Michael Jackson is more internationally acclaimed than Elvis.

  2. I really never listened to neither of them, but I heard of Michael Jackson more than I did of Presley so I if I had to choose between one or the other, I would choose Michael Jackson. I heard of Michael while I was living in Germany when I was young, but to tell you the truth I was not really introduced to his music until a couple years ago by my girlfriend who is a huge fan. I couldn’t name but maybe 2 or 3 of his songs and as far as Presley, I know that I have heard some of his songs, but I couldn’t name any of them if I was asked to.
I would have to say that the reason why Michael Jackson reached the level of popularity that he did is because of the new technology that is out now that wasn’t out when Presley was big. Nowadays, I think one watches TV more than they listen to the radio; therefore, Michael was able to get to a bigger audience for his videos. Also, Michael was on the news for many different, extraordinary reasons than Elvis. For example, he was on the news for his nose surgeries, his skin changing color, his incident with the young boy, and many other reasons.
Though I’m not the person that listens to neither of their music, I would have to say that with the points made above, Michael Jackson’s popularity got a hold of the rest of the world quicker; therefore, making him more internationally known than Elvis.

  3. Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley are two well respected music artist. Michael Jackson was the King of Pop and Elvis Presley was the King of Rock. But Michael Jackson has to get the edge in this because of the era in which he came. I believe this because of technological advances, such as music videos, and the availability of television. Since more people had televisions he was more marketable because he would make appearances on top shows and more people got to see who he was. Another reason that Michael Jackson was a bigger international superstar, was because he did more international tours, and Elvis Presley did mostly tours around the USA. Michael Jackson in his prime was more marketable then Elvis Presley because he would do thing such as Pepsi commercials. He was a better crossover artist which helped him create a broader fan-base, making him more of an international superstar. He also began performing at an earlier age than Elvis which also gained exposure. He was also a visionary, his videos and music may have been ground-breaking and stand out more. His work still influences the music of our time, such as musical artist such as Chris Brown and Ne-yo. Another reason Michael Jackson became more internationally famous is because he was always in the press. Even if it was bad press or good this also helped to get his name out more. So in conclusion, Michael Jackson is more of an international superstar than Elvis because of his exposure, technological advances, and b/c of the time frame he came into the music industry.

Adding to the comments above, I would have to agree that Elvis and Michael were both very talented artists and both were extremely well known and popular icons. With that being said, I would have to agree that michael Jackson was a more well known star with more international acclaim than Elvis ever could have been, mostly because of the growth in technology and music being so available through the internet and translations etc. Thus, I think if Michael and Elvis would have switched places of when they were around, I believe the same thing probably would have happened, but I'm torn.. Michael was very much a POP icon where as Elvis was more ROCK/COUNTRY/BLUES I think at the time both brought something new and interesting to the table that wasnt really being done. I think that Michael was more broad in his type of music and took more risks than Elvis, with Elvis you were pretty sure of what you were getting, but with each new album that Michael put out, there was more variety? Elvis really only made a name for himself in the US and the UK, where Michael was loved and adored by fans globally. Both men were truly loved and adored by millions ad the ironic chance that Elvis' only child ended up marrying Michael made a big media splash and made this connection so much more than just a coincidence. That being said... this is a link to lisa marie presley's blog about michael: http://blogs.myspace.com/lisamariepresley

I agree with a lot of what you said about Michael Jackson’s broader fan base and better marketability over Elvis Presley. Michael’s marketability and international tours made him better known throughout, unlike Elvis. I also agree with your statement on the era each of them came into. Elvis’ time was less technologic, which brought simpler music videos and exposure. Michael had flashy dancing music videos and advances in television and radio to enhance his chances of getting heard. People took notice of Michael when he was young, like you said, and his impact still influences those like Ne-Yo and Chris Brown, so Michael’s footprint is still noticeable even after his pre mature death.

I feel that it was a correct claim that Michael Jackson was truly the first international pop star. If you went anywhere in the world during the time that Michael Jackson started his career, you would be able to hear his music. Even right before his death, Michael Jackson was preparing to go on a music tour in London, England. Elvis was mainly popular in the United States because of the type of music that he sang. For instance he started out with gospel music. Michael Jackson’s music is more relatable and everyone is able to enjoy it.
Although Elvis Presley was extremely popular during his time, he did not have the means to project his fame to the rest of the world. Michael Jackson had the technology that was able to show his music to the rest of the world. For example, Michael Jackson had one of the first music videos to air on television. Elvis on the other hand, only had his music played primarily on the radio stations. Both the men were also pioneers with their dancing styles (Michael Jackson with the moonwalk and Elvis Presley with his shaking hips). However, Elvis’ dance style was criticized as being obscene and vulgar. Michael Jackson’s dancing was seen as brand new and praised.
Michael Jackson was also able to achieve his international fame through the things that he did. Michael Jackson had plastic surgery done, and although it didn’t turn out well, his fame grew because of it. The publicity that Michael Jackson has received has not always been good, but it has made him more and more of an international icon.

    Alex,
Although I would agree that Michael Jackson had a very interesting and strange childhood, I would have to disagree that this was the main reason that he became the great international celebrity he was. Elvis Presley grew up doing all kinds of drugs and was getting into a lot of trouble during his younger years. Instead of letting this get to him, Elvis used his hard life as inspiration for a lot of his music. I think that Elvis had a life just as interesting as Michael Jackson’s, however, he was able to overcome all the obstacles in his.

Do I believe Micheal Jackson was the first international pop star? Pop Star maybe, but just international star? No I do not. In my own opinion, Elvis Presley was the first international star. Sure if i didn't know any better I'd agree with everyone and say he was but I know from personal experience Elvis was. I used to live in Michigan and about four houses down the street was a foriegn exchange house where students could live from different countries. When i was younger my best friend and I thought it was hilarious because these three guys from London were constantly blasting old Elvis music. They were absolutley obssesed with him. Through this arguement though I am in no way discrediting anything Micheal Jackson did. Micheal Jackson was a much larger international star than Elvis or anyone for that matter. This was proven when he his most recent tour tickets went up for sale in England and sold out in four minutes. In my opionon, the reason for this was because he was such a hit at such an early age. By the time he was eighteen he must have had at least ten hit songs. With such a long great career, there's no reason why he shouldn't have been. Besides for his vocals, Micheal Jackson was most know for his crazy dance moves. Some would argue that he invented pop artists dancing. His thriller video was probably the most internationaly recognized music video of its time because of the dance moves. Micheal Jackson could dance and probably was insane. Bottom line.

Harold, I really agree with what you said about Jacksons fame over Elvis. If Elvis had the more modern technology that he did, I have no doubt that Elvis could have been just as big if not bigger than Micheal. I also whole heartily agree that his creepy and crazy life contributed some to his fame. I mean any pop star that holds a baby out a window is going to get media attention. As for the nose job and the skin change, who can say what he was trying to do. His odd eccentrics defiantly helped him achieve the fame he did.

  10. I have never taken a great interest in either of these music artists, but have listen to some of their music. I believe Michael Jackson had the ability to become known worldwide because of his ability to be liked by many different people. Michael’s ability to be such a great entertainer with his singing and dancing combined is what allowed him to be well known and liked around the world. Someone from across the globe could go to one of Michael’s shows and be entertained by his dancing and showmanship without even knowing what his is saying. Elvis is a highly recognized performer around the states but never become popular out of the country. Without knowing the English language an Elvis concert could been seen as strange or boring. Although I enjoy Elvis’s music a lot more than Michael’s I understand why Elvis never made it as an international pop star like Michael has in his life time. The performance on stage is what I believe separates Michael and Elvis from both being known worldwide.
I also believe Elvis never made an attempt to spread his music world wide. Elvis faced many road blocks in his life such as drug addiction and marital problems that have prevented him from trying to spread his music worldwide. Michael made efforts to travel overseas to sing and dance for people so he could become known worldwide as an international pop star. This is why I believe Michael was truly an international pop star and why Elvis was never really known worldwide.

  11. I agree that Michael Jackson reached a level of international acclaim that Elvis never could have. Michael Jackson began his career as a child and became famous at a very young age. But I believe the time periods in which these legends became famous made a major difference on their careers. Elvis did not have the technology like MJ and was not yet introduced to certain styles of music that helped broaden Michaels music. But I have to give it to Elvis because he had to be one of Michael Jacksons influences and made it somewhat possible for MJ to do what he did.
Michael Jackson became so famous and so well known for obvious reasons. Yes, he was the King of Pop and great at what he did. It did help that he was in the news so often for things other than his music. But whatever it was, it helped boost his popularity whether it was negative or positive news. Michael Jackson was a legend and will be remembered for his great success and of course the moon walk.

  12. Brandon I agree with alot of what you said. I am not a big follower of Michael Jackson or Elvis Presley but i do feel that Michael set the bar higher. I also agree that his ability to perform on stage and sell his music helped his career move forward and get him to the top. Elvis did face many road blocks that that affected his career negatively but Michael Jackson had problems as well. He was able to overcome those problems and keep his fame andd popularity. That is why I agree that Michael Jackson made it bigger than Elvis.

  13. Harold, I think you are correct in saying that Michael was able to spread his name worldwide because of the new technology that was available during his time. I strongly agree in your point that TV has had a huge impact on spreading Michael’s name to not just people in the U.S. but people around the world. You are also correct in saying that all of Michaels incidents that occurred during his life time that have given him many hours of air time on TV which have exposed him to people all around the world. Many people listen to the radio, but TV is transmitted around the worlds which allowed people not only to hear Michael but also see him.

  14. I believe Michael Jackson was a pop star, but I honestly can’t say whether he was an international popstar because I don’t know how popular he was in other countries. Also, I’m not aware of how many other countries he was well known or liked. I do think that his start as a child had something to do with his fame because a lot of people are suckers for children; especially those with talents. He was one of the child stars that continued onto an adult career. I think Michael Jackson had a definite advantage over Elvis Presley. The many different ways people can hear music now probably affected how popular Michael was compared to Elvis. Though Michael was known by our age group as a pedifile that had some good songs to our parents he was a very well liked musician. The scandal kept Michael in the news for awhile, which as I hear it “all publicity is good publicity”. Alhough I have heard that Elvis had scandals as well they may have just taken longer to become known. While both these stars were popular and started new music trends I’m not sure I can say Michael was more popular because he was Michael. I believe it was a timing issue and if Elvis had been at the time of all the media and technology he too would have been just as popular. Though they may have had different followings because lets face it their music was nothing alike. This could have played a role in popularity depending on what was happening at the time these two came out on the music scene. So I believe Michael was more popular than Elvis, but only because of timing, scandals and technology.

  15. Ryan you make a great point that Elvis’s style started gospel, but he did progress to a more relatable genre of Rock. Though he was popular in the U.S. I think if the resources had been available he too would have been played in different countries. As you say “If you went anywhere in the world during the time that Michael Jackson started his career, you would be able to hear his music”. I also believe if Elvis had come out during our time his dance style wouldn’t have been seen as obscene considering how most people dance today. Elvis also had a lot of drama during his life, maybe not plastic surgery, but he didn’t show it to the world as Michael Jackson did. If he had this may have been played into his publicity.

Evan, I do agree with you that Elvis was an international star, however I do not think he reached the same level as Michael. Yes Elvis was very well known in England and other countries of the UK, but aside from that and a couple other European countries that were not impoverished, he was not as well known or heard of as Jackson. Literally he can be one of the most recognized names in popular culture along with other icons like Mickey Mouse its names like these that are in the top 5. Granted, Elvis could easily be in the top 10.

  17. I never really listened to Michael Jackson or Elvis. I’m more of a country girl but I have heard of them. Ever since I was little I have always heard of Elvis, the rock and roll king. Not until the movie 13 going on 30 came out, did I become familiar with the Jackson’s music. Ever since that movie I would hear a song and then associate it with Michael Jackson. For the comment made that Jackson is more internationally known then Elvis, I would have to agree. For one there is a thirty year difference in technology. In the fifties, it was not as easy getting known internationally as it was in the eighties. The media had become more advanced. Elvis will always be known for being the king of rock and roll with his swinging hips.

I believe that Jackson became more known internationally because he started out young as a kid. He also had a woman’s voice, which I have also thought is funny. Michael was also diagnosed with vitiligo universalis, making him go from black to white. He had plastic surgery and was accused of molesting children and dangling them from balconies. I don’t believe Elvis would ever be able to be known as well as Michael Jackson. Michael was famous but was it for the right reasons?

Elvis was known for the swinging of his hips. He made dance more…. Sexual I guess you could you say? He traveled all over America, while Jackson was able to tour to farther lands. What I find funny is that a lot of people were disgusted by Michael’s actions and thoughts but once he died there was great mourning. I believe we will all miss the young version of Jackson but not the 21st century Jackson. He brought a whole new genre to dancing from Thriller to Beat it. His dancing was more outlandish than Elvis’. Plus America was able to follow the dance steps to Jackson while people were only able to strike the poses of Elvis and imitate his voice. Jackson will always be more internationally known but Elvis will always be known for his crazy hips and being the King of rock and roll.

I strongly feel that Michael Jackson is not more acclaimed them Elvis. I believe they are both in the same status just in a different genre of music. Michael had many interesting stories printed bout him but so did Elvis in his own way. I don’t think that gossip or tabloid news should be taken into account when talking about how famous they were for their music. I am fully aware that Michael was more known throughout the world but I don’t believe he achieved the degree of fans that Elvis did in the united states. Elvis Presley was not our time and died even before we were born in the late 70’s which led us to believe that Michael Jackson is more famous. Many people in our age bracket might not even know who Elvis is but if this assignment was given to an older group of people the outcome would certainly be different. Both Elvis and Michael were huge influences in music. On the other hand Elvis started his own. Even though his music sounded completely different than the rock music we hear on the radio now if it was not for the first step he took the genre itself would not exist today. As was previously stated, if Elvis was able to get the same resources that Michael had because of the technology that was acquired throughout the years, he would have been just as known. The king of rock and roll and the king of pop are both royalty. So putting together the international fans of Michael and the local fans of Elvis mixing in how resources affected their careers I sill maintain the belief they are both equally as recognized in their own time.

  19. Demetrius,
I agree with you. I believe that there was a big difference in time period when it came to technology. I didn’t even think about music videos… good point. Both of the singers are very well known. They are both famous. What is funny is that its mostly for their dancing. You brought up a great point with Jackson being a cross over artist and influencing the dancers/ singers of today. I was watching So you think you can dance, and one of the dancers was talking about he was a Jackson fan and how he knew all his moves. I think that Jackson’s music is still popular today because our decade is all into the eighties and his music has the pop plus the dance moves. Jackson will always be known for his Thriller.

Brandon, I believe that BOTH artist have the same ability so be liked by many different kinds of people. And they were. Just because Elvis wasn’t known international doesn’t mean he was not just as equally adored by different kinds of people in the U.S. too. Each artist had their own signature dance moves and were equally known to be amazing performers. Plus I am pretty sure both of them sang in English. It wasn’t that Elvis made no attempt to spread his music world wide. If he had the recourses available to him that Michael had, he would of pushed to be even more known.

I also have to agree with you when you say that the reasons for Michael's success are scandals, technology, and timing.
I would also like to agree with Evan. I do think that Thriller was a hot video and was very well recognized, being that that video is probably the only video I have seen. And I love it.

I agree fully with Alex and all the points he has. His thoughts are backed up with valid information. And i feel as if Michael Jackson is the bigger international superstar. When you said because of TV. and being exposed to music at a younger age, and being in the tabloids made him bigger that was true. And it was also one of the point I expressed in my comment too. Elvis Presley was more of an US star and basically toured round the US, and was also basically only heard on the radio b/c most people in his time era didn't have television. The only thing I could add is that Michael sold more records and had more #1 hits than Elvis. But Alex explained everything throughly and it was very persuasive in showing that Michael is the bigger superstar. Elvis was good but Michael just had more resources at his disposal.

I agree that Michael Jackson was truly the first international pop star. With the release of his album “Thriller,” Michael Jackson made a name for himself far beyond that of Elvis Presley. His crazy styles, trademark dance moves, and unique falsetto sound, allowed him to take the world by storm. Although Elvis, in his time, was an American icon, he could never reach the level of international acclaim that Michael Jackson achieved. Elvis was known best by his fans as the deep voiced, hip jerking “hunk of burning love” that would make girls, like my great grandmother, cry. Michael was the 80s version of Elvis, but times 10. He went even further by making headlines all over the world with his risqué behavior: changing his physical appearance, dangling his baby over a ledge, and even enduring alleged claims that he was a child molester. I think that since Michael was in the spotlight longer he had the pressure of trying to be more than he already was and go way beyond what any artist had ever done, just to prove he still had it. His way of showing that he still “had it” was going to be in the form of a 3 year long worldwide concert tour this summer after decades of no new music. Even after this long break hundreds of thousands people bought tickets to this once in a lifetime opportunity, thereby confirming his international pop star status had not budged.

    Allison,
I agree that timing, scandals, and technology all affect how both artists are perceived. Had Elvis had the same resources as Michael I’m sure he would have gone just as big. Also the fact that there styles of music were completely different affects how many people listen to their music. Elvis’ rock n roll style was the first of its kind, ergo “the rock n roll king,” and Michael’s style of music followed the 80s trend of dance music. I also agree with you that his childhood career as a singer gave him the cuteness factor, since he was the youngest in the group and one of the ones with the most talent.

    ReplyDelete
  26. It’s really not fair to say that Michael Jackson reached a level of international acclaim that Elvis never could because Elvis and Michael lived in two different time periods. Although Michael deserves to be acknowledged for the many achievements he had, Elvis deserves the same recognition for the many contributions he made in music. There were things that were available to Michael Jackson fans such as internet and television that were not as frequent to find in the homes of Elvis fans because of the expense, and lack of technology at the time. They were both adored, but Michael had the upper hand for being born later. I think Michael grew to become such an internationally known artist because of the curiosity that many people had to understand why he behaved the way he did. He was strange to many but we couldn’t help but to love him because of the innocence he had in his heart, from being deprived of a regular childhood. His soft voice, tight pants, and skin color change were just a few reasons for why people were so fascinated by him. Not to mention his famous siblings that could not stay away from the tabloids. Michael will forever be a legend, but if the tables were turned and Elvis was born in Michael’s time, there would be the same world wide morn as there is for Michael now.

  27. Stefanie, I do agree that Michael Jackson reached a certain level of recognition that Elvis did not, but just because Elvis did not reach that level, doesn’t mean he couldn’t. Michael Jackson had more resources to his fans so that he was able to branch out and share his music with a wider variety of people. While Elvis was limited in the way he was able to share his music, so in the end Michael Jackson had an upper hand to becoming more famous to more people. If Michael lived in Elvis’ time do you think he would have gotten as famous and as nationally acclaimed as he is today?

  28. It’s very hard to claim one of them as the first internationally known star, but the question asks of the first internationally known pop star and with no doubt, that was Michael Jackson. Elvis, I feel, holds the position as the first internationally known Rock ‘N Roll star. Although Presley didn’t travel and exploit his music outside of the United States, like Jackson did, after his death he has become very famous worldwide. Jackson’s popularity was on the rise with his band, Jackson 5. Through this he was able to branch off and create his own solo album. Not only was he already known through the band, but he also used the best technology of that era to bring him fame. I think that Michael was able to snatch fans all over the world because of the way he performed and advertised his music. He was one of the first musicians to express their song(s) through a music video. Jackson’s upbeat music and amazing dance moves helped in making his videos the best. Elvis would have never been able to produce something like this, simply because of the time in which he lived. They both had specific characteristics that made fans rave…Elvis: “Elvis the pelvis”, a white sequined jumpsuit, sideburns, and sunglasses. Jackson: Crazy dance moves and choreography (moonwalk!), awesome music videos, creepy skin bleaching, and plastic surgery. Were they both amazing? Yes. Did Jackson have a little bit more of a boost at his fame? I think so. If Elvis were to live when Jackson did and Jackson to live when Elvis did, I believe Jackson would have had the underhand here and Elvis would have been able to stretch his career to greater lengths.

  29. Vanessa, I completely agree with you about different age brackets perceiving the artists differently. I haven’t ever been a huge fan of either but because Michael Jackson was in my time (partially), I naturally knew more about him and was more familiar with his music. Your post got me thinking about different ages in general…for instance, I was wondering about 5, 10, 17, 30 year olds within Elvis’ time period and those in Jackson’s. I was thinking that maybe because of Jackson’s younger band, Jackson 5, he able to bring in fans of ages with his genre of music. Maybe Elvis’ genre of music and more mature feel made him grow more slowly than Jackson did.

Michael Jackson was definitely the first international pop star. His fame overpowered Elvis Presley by a long shot. My first reason I believe this is because Michael had both white and black audiences. He lived in a time period much different from Elvis but because of the cultural change and time change he was able to reach new heights. Elvis on the other hand was not fund of the African-American community and they were not very fund of him either. When an artist branch out to a variety of audiences their fame explodes. Another thing is technological changes. Michael was able to be seen world wide on television and had feeds on the fast growing net. Elvis didn't have these opportunities because technology had not yet advanced during his time. Michael also went on to become the first African- American on MTV, an all white television network. I don’t think there will ever be anyone else in the world that topped to pop charts like Michael did. In conclusion, Elvis does not, will not, and can not compare to Michael Jackson. Mike’s legacy is great. His dancing, singing, and just overall being, made him who he was from childhood up until his sudden death. In my opinion Michael will always be the king of pop and there is and was none like him. Besides, Michael’s music still plays unlike Elvis’. Elvis’ music is dead now. Even though Michael is gone he will most certainly never be forgotten by anyone in the world.

I totally disagree with Vanessa. Michael and Elvis did not have the ability to be liked by all kinds of people. Number one, Elvis was, how can I put this, racist. His music was for the white people of his time. Did we forget what years Elvis lived in? Black and white cocktails was not going on during this time at all. It is impossible to say that they both reached the same heights with a variety of cultures because in reality it was not true.

I've had good and bad experiences with working in groups. Last year I worked in groups a lot in my English Literature class. Most of the time I got a pretty good group; other times not so good of a group. Sometimes there is always that one person who never does anything but get the same grade that you do. I hate that although sometimes that person is me when I'm not having a good day. But most of the time I do. I remember in my biology class in 10th grade I had a group and I did the entire project by myself. Because I had no help I didn't finish the project and the whole group received a D. I wasn't mad about it but they were mad at me. Just think a person that did not work getting mad at the person for doing all the work and receiving a D. I didn't have a bad grade in the class like they did so the one D didn't get me upset at all. They were seniors so that grade meant a lot to them. To me, if something like your grade means a lot to you, you would contribute to the group. I like working with people who care about their grade just the same as I care about mine. I kind of like working in groups though. Working in groups gives you the opportunity to get to know people. I’m looking forward to working in groups in the class. Everyone seems fun and my group (Backwards Oreo) seem like they don’t mind working for their grade.

Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley were both famous around the world and were both extremely talented individuals. During each of their time periods they both had something that people were drawn to. Not only were they both strong vocally, but they were well rounded performers that not only did things to benefit them, but to help their fans and community as well. I do not believe that Michael Jackson reached a level of international acclaim that Elvis Presley never could have. Who is to say that just because Elvis Presley came before Jackson he would not have been capable of doing the same things as Michael? Time and technology was on Michael’s side and because of this he had some of the best music videos the eighties has ever seen. They both have brought a lot to the music industry and are known and will be known across the world forever as, the “King of Pop” and the “King of Rock n Roll.” But to say that one has accomplished more then the other or would have accomplished more than the other just is not fair. Elvis Presley made a lot of contributions during his time and even created his own style of music known as “rockabilly” by mixing country and blues. It would not be fair to ask if Michael Jackson was placed in Elvis’ time period, do you think he would have succeeded in a way that Elvis did? They both have made a huge impact on our society and Michael has done some pretty incredible things. Someone who has created world famous dances, held the best selling record of all time, and made a huge impact of the hip-hop world, will never be forgotten and will always be internationally known.

    Ryan,
Yes Michael Jackson is an international icon and yes I agree his music was loved and can be heard all around the world, but that does not mean Elvis’ was not either. Yes his music was directed more towards Americans but not only was he a great singer, like Michael Jackson he was a great performer and dancer as well. People loved to watch him and at that time was one of the first to perform broadcasting out on television. Also, there is a difference between good publicity and bad publicity, his plastic surgeries and drastic color change was not necessarily what made him an “international icon” it is just something he will always be remembered for.
